Mike’s journey into craftsmanship began early—at just 14 years old, he was already learning the ropes of construction in the rugged beauty of the Beartooth Mountains. From landscape construction and concrete foundation work to securing a sports scholarship at Southern Virginia University, his path has been marked by dedication, hard work, and skill.
Meet Mike — Founder of Beartooth Paint & Design
-
After serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and earning a Business Management degree from Montana State University-Billings, Mike joined The Sherwin-Williams Paint Company. Over the next seven years, he managed multiple stores in Montana and Utah, becoming a go-to expert in paint, coatings, and application techniques. Whether it was a homeowner searching for the perfect finish or a professional contractor fine-tuning their technique, Mike provided trusted guidance and training.
In 2018, Mike and his family planted roots in Utah. Fueled by a childhood dream of entrepreneurship and a passion for craftsmanship, he launched Beartooth Built (now Beartooth Paint & Design) in 2022.
The Meaning Behind "Beartooth"
Born in the shadows of the Beartooth Mountains, Mike originally launched the brand as an Instagram page, showcasing woodworking and home renovation projects. As interest grew and his skillset evolved, so did the vision. Today, Beartooth Paint & Design is the culmination of Mike’s passion for creativity, construction, and community.
We don’t just paint houses—we create environments. And we believe that young people should be empowered with the skills to improve their own spaces, homes, and futures. That’s why Mike also aims to mentor youth and promote meaningful, fulfilling careers in the trades.
Frequently Asked Questions
Your top questions, answered by the experts at Beartooth Paint & Design
-
Yes — but it depends. Priming is essential for new drywall, bare wood, metal surfaces, or when painting over oil-based finishes. If your walls have already been painted in the last few decades, a thorough cleaning may be enough. However, primer can be a smart choice when making a drastic color change, helping you achieve a vibrant, even finish with fewer coats.
-
Typically, latex paint dries to the touch in about 1 hour and can be safely recoated in 4 hours. Oil-based paints take longer — usually 6–8 hours to dry and up to 24 hours to recoat. Drying time can vary based on humidity, temperature, ventilation, and the type of surface. We’ll always advise you on proper cure times after your project is complete.
-
Technically yes, but we don’t recommend it unless it’s your only option. Painting over wallpaper can lead to uneven textures, peeling, or bubbling over time. If removal isn’t possible, we’ll prep the surface by sealing the wallpaper and smoothing out seams for the best possible outcome. Professional prep is key to long-term durability.
-
Satin finishes have a soft sheen and are ideal for living rooms, hallways, and bedrooms. They’re easier to clean than flat paint but not too shiny.
Gloss (or semi-gloss) finishes are more reflective and moisture-resistant, making them great for kitchens, bathrooms, trim, and cabinets.
Choosing the right finish depends on the room’s function and your preferred look. We’ll help guide you through the options.
-
Choosing a paint color is both art and science! We recommend:
Considering lighting and natural tones in the room
Testing a few sample swatches on the walls at different times of day
Looking at furniture and decor for complementary tones
Our team at Beartooth Paint & Design is happy to offer a color consultation to help you select the perfect palette for your space.
-
We recommend the following steps:
Remove small items and cover large furniture with drop cloths.
Clean walls with mild soap and water, especially in kitchens or bathrooms.
Repair any holes or dents — or let us take care of that for you.
Remove switch plates and outlet covers.
Make sure the space is well-ventilated during and after painting.
Don’t worry — we always handle professional prep, so you don’t have to stress!
